Japanese wine berries (Rubus phoenicolasius)
£13.75
This is part of the Bramble family. It grows well in the Forest Garden foraging hedge and likes full sun or partial shade. Once established they will produce long thick stems coated with red fine spines. It looks very refined as the tips of the arching branches bear sweet red fruits in July. The calix surrounding the fruit breaks away just prior to ripening so the birds don’t see the fruit developing. The colour of the new fruit starts off yellow, quickly turning orange and then red all within a few days, and ready for picking. The harvest is spread over a number of weeks.
