Climate Change
Simon’s thoughts on how Forest Gardening can help food production systems become more sustainable for the future
Climate change is affecting the world’s food production. With the UK currently importing approximately 50% of its food from abroad, it’s critical that we take responsibility for producing as much food as we can for ourselves in the future.
Forest gardening / Food Forest are low input food productive systems which lend themselves to community led food production. Through community interest companies. I think that every community should have access to a forest garden / Food Forest as part of the food production top up needed, alongside other local growers like market gardens.
I see their existence as critical to remove the pressure from big Agri to produce enough food for all. Plus, it can provide empowerment and a degree of local food security. These perennial food systems produce highly nutritious tasty food delivered in a sustainable way, and just being in them, is superb for all our mental health.
