The spirit of a Hunter Gatherer

A Forage Garden

Before the arrival of farming our ancestors were expertly adapted to hunting animals and gathering edible & medicinal leaves, flowers, nuts, seeds and fruits.

They moved from place to place with the changing rhythms of the seasons gathering what was needed and no more.

The forest garden is a concentrated essence of that spirit and the ‘forage hedge’ a practical embodiment of this way of being. A considered design system!

The picture left shows a 4-year-old forage hedge 24m long with 5 layers of plants from small trees down to ground cover plants etc.

It blends species from the four corners of the earth to match their individual requirements for light and space to make them easy to manage and easy to harvest.
