Coastal hedging plants for sale

Hedging plants are a very useful addition to both a modest domestic garden and forest garden schemes alike. They offer privacy, wind protection and shelter, the latter much needed to allow you to grow other plants within the protected space created.

We split our hedging into two categories coastal, (see below), and native hedging. (page coming soon).

All our plant height sizes quoted are an approximate guide for customers, and are measured from the top of the pot. However, the sizes will vary as plants are alive and, if the temperature is above 10 degrees C, are growing.

Simon’s Top Tips for buying Coastal Hedging

Although people might be immediately drawn to the plant height to give the most immediate impact, we usually trim back our hedging plants, prior to them exiting the nursery, to help the plants achieve their potential by filling out near the base once planted.

All the plants listed in this section are apical dominant and want to grow upwards. We ‘check’ the branch framework by pruning before or at planting time, so that the the density of branch growth at the base of the hedge will not be compromised.

Remember growing plants in pots is not a natural phenomenon it’s just a convenience to mankind as a way of being able to move plants around from location to location at any time of year. Therefore, a metre high plant in a 3 litre pot is not going to have the immediate anchorage within the ground to support the sail area that the foliage produces. By trimming back before planting there is time for the roots to establish while being under less pressure from the wind until the root / foliage ratio recalibrates itself, usually within the first few growing seasons.

Spacings:

Allow 450mm centres within the row. In exposed locations a double row may well be beneficial.

In severely exposed locations a series of parallel hedges a few meters apart may be preferred with the most exposed hedge being sacrificial to the hedge behind it.

Why we are offering these plants:

After 40 years in horticulture and applying many of these plants to various situations for clients I have settled for the fact that all the species list in this section can play a useful part protection from salt winds in a coastal location. However, it is the Quercus Ilex and the Olearia’s that are best for the most severe coastal weather conditions. Plus being none native species to the UK they don’t come with any notable disease issues, too.
